Hodge Oboe Gouging Machine v2

Interchangeable for Oboe, English Horn, Oboe d'amore, Bass oboe, and Baroque oboe

The Hodge Oboe Gouging Machine v2 is our custom design, manufactured to our specifications by Reeds 'n Stuff. Every adjustment happens from the top of the machine. You never need to unscrew it from your workbench, flip it over, or risk knocking the blade during routine setup changes.

Top-Access Adjustments

Gouge thickness, shaving thickness, blade rotation, carriage centering, and guillotine adjustments all happen from above. A single lever loosens the bed for gouge-thickness adjustment, and the bed and stops move together as one unit. The thinner-to-thicker scale gives you precise, repeatable control: each millimeter on the scale corresponds to roughly 0.01 mm of change in finished gouge thickness.

Engineered for Consistency

The carriage rides on bearings for a smooth, even pass. Spring-loaded levers and gripping teeth hold the cane firmly against the bed, keeping the gouge consistent from side to side and across the center. A safety stop holds the carriage in a partially upright position when you need both hands free, protecting the blade from accidental contact.

Standard Configuration set for oboe

  • 76 mm oboe bed, 11 mm in diameter
  • 11.41 mm three-sided circular blade
  • Designed to gouge cane 0.70mm thick in the center and 0.45mm on the sides.
  • Holds cane from 10 mm to 11 mm
  • Built-in guillotine with a 76 to 94 mm length scale
  • Includes carrying case, detachable handle, and transport screw

Exchange Sets

Convert the machine to musette, oboe d'amore, English horn, bass oboe, or Baroque oboe with an exchange set. We offer guillotine knives in 10 mm to 15 mm diameters. The Baroque oboe exchange set pairs an 82 mm bed sized for 15 mm cane with an 18 mm blade.

Built to Last

The three-sided circular blade gives you three working faces before replacement: rotate to the next face roughly every thousand pieces of cane. We replace worn carriage bumpers free of charge for the life of the machine. And if your blade ever falls out of center or parallel with the bed, send the machine back to us and we'll set it right.

Instructions for the gouging machine can be found on our blog. (New info coming soon.)

We have included a video made by Reeds 'n Stuff of their machine that the Hodge machine is based on. It shows exactly how our machine works for gouging. If you study the pictures, you will notice that our machine has a lever and a knob showing and those are a couple of the extra features on our machine that make adjustments so easy.

    Great Gouger

This gouger is very easy to use. It came already set to how i like, but after tinkering with it a bit, I found it is very easy to set up how one might like it.

    Easy to use, precise gouger

Posted by Bruce S. on Nov 17th 2016

This is a very easy to use, totally consistent, well-made gouger. I've been using it for more than a couple of years and it's still a pleasure and helps me make more consistent, controllable reeds. My only quip, a really minor one, is that I wish the reed bed were interchangeable as they are on the basic R'n'S gouger so I could just change to one for my EH without getting a second gouger, but the Hodge design is much easier to adjust and set than the basic R'n'S gouger so it's a fair trade-off. Well done, Ann.
