Reed Machines Oboe Profiling Machine - CUBE
This is a fascinating machine. It is so small and compact with transportability built in. The tiny blade has 8 sides so when the blade needs to be sharper, you can just turn it to the next side. At this time, there is only one U.S. template but there are so many ways that the machine can be adjusted to fit your reeds. You can adjust how much is taken out of the back separate from the tip. Gauges for four areas of the reed allow for accurate adjustments to customize the machine for your reeds.
Standard templates are available but Reed Machines makes customized templates as well. The machine can be adjusted for the length of the tip and the position of the collar, making the length of the profile adjustable. In addition, the collar can have a “V” or “W” shape, the thickness of the tip and the force on the knife are adjustable. Lastly, the thickness of the collar is adjustable while the thickness of the tip stays the same. This is by far the most important (and unique) adjustment of the profiler.
A characteristic already mentioned is that the blade is round and can be used in 8 positions. (The lifetime of a knife is thousands of reeds.) Another characteristic is that the reed can be rotated 180° without taking the reed from the profiler. With this function the two sides of the reed can be scraped very accurately in relation to each other and it makes the scraping process efficient. It is also possible to profile only the first 1mm or 4mm of the reed tip.

The template holds the 3 dimensional profile that is copied to the reed by the profiler. For this template the thickness difference between the middle and the sides of the reed tip is 0,025mm based on a reed tip width of 7,0mm. It is possible to make wider or narrower reeds and to scrape till the whole length of the profiled reed part.
The shape at the end of the profile is defined by the end shape part.
US 024
The template holds the 3 dimensional profile that is copied to the reed by the profiler. For this template the thickness difference between the middle and the sides of the reed tip is 0,065mm based on a reed tip width of 6,6mm. It is possible to make wider or narrower reeds and to scrape till the whole length of the profiled reed part.
US 028
The template holds the 3 dimensional profile that is copied to the reed by the profiler. For this template the thickness difference between the middle and the sides of the reed tip is -0,005mm [A] based on a reed tip width of 6,7mm. It is possible to make wider or narrower reeds and to scrape till the whole length of the profiled reed part.
The shape at the end of the profile is defined by the end shape part.
[A] The minus sign means the sides of the reed tip are thicker than the middle of the reed tip.

For this template the thickness difference between the middle and the sides of the reed tip is 0,045mm based on a reed tip width of 7,0mm. It is possible to make wider or narrower reeds and to scrape till the whole length of the profiled reed part.
