The bent staple is designed to allow better posture for the oboist. A sound spectra analysis chart shows no change in sound quality between straight and bent staples. This is similar to an English horn bocal, allowing the player to hold the instrument closer to their body while sitting/standing with the head up for more comfortable playing.
