Chiarugi Brass Baroque Oboe Staple, 60mm
The baroque oboe staple consists of much larger overall dimensions than the modern oboe staple and the resulting reed produces a lower pitch and more mellow tone than the modern oboe. The baroque oboe is generally tuned to 415 Hz and made of boxwood. The 60mm staple is a one piece staple that works well with the Stanesby baroque oboe. Reed-maker, Marcel Ponseele, prefers this size for his Stanesby model. Reed-makers, Joel Robinson and Steven Hammer, have cut this staple down at the bottom to between 54mm and 51mm to work well with a Saxon model baroque oboe.

*There are two types of baroque staples. A two piece staple consists of two separate parts, a top part where the cane is tied on to create the reed and a bottom part or understaple, which is usually an oboe d'amore or English horn staple customized by the reed maker to fit inside the bore of the baroque oboe. The top and bottom parts are stacked on top of one another creating a step between the tubes causing increased resistance. A one piece staple contains one longer piece of brass creating less resistance than the two part set up.
