Reed Machines Oboe Gouging Machine Carriage Sets
The carriage set holds the knife which defines the gouge diameter. With different carriage sets you can use the gouger for different types of oboe cane. It is easy to change a carriage set. The combination of cane diameter and knife diameter defines the difference in thickness between the middle and the sides of the gouged cane. Read more about this here.
The knife of the carriage set is very pointed and extends just a little bit out of the carriage. When the knife wears, and does not extend enough from the carriage anymore, it cannot cut cane although it is still sharp. Reed Machines made the knife adjustable so you can restore the extension and use the knife to gouge even more pieces of cane.
